Web Design Tricks to Grow Traffic

Attracting visitors is a challenge for every new website. If only you could wave a magic wand and they would appear! While it's not that simple to attract visitors, it doesn’t have to be terribly difficult either.
Don't worry if you're not a marketing wizard or SEO guru, we've got you covered. The first thing to understand is what attracts people to your website. This means understanding your customers, why they buy, what matters to them, and if there is a problem your product or service might help them solve.
Then next step is to optimize your web content. Optimized content, in simple terms, is content that people want to consume. It's attractive to both people and search engines. Optimized content also means that people are sticking around on your site, and even coming back.
To grow your website traffic, you'll first need to know what your current traffic numbers are. Knowing your baseline means you'll be able to track your visitor growth.
Here at FruitStand, we will keep track of the most important statistics for you.
Understanding your traffic
Metrics that you'll want to keep track of include:
- Unique visitors
- Pages per visit
- Average time on site
- Bounce rate
- Traffic sources
- Exit pages
Checking these numbers frequently means you can manage what's working and fix what's not.
Next, you'll want to create a targeted content marketing strategy. It's at this point that many websites will start to fumble or get off-track. Many sites either don't have a strategy, or if they do, it's often missing the mark. This is something FruitStand can help you with.
When creating your content marketing strategy, keep in mind the type of content you offer, such as blogs, videos, info-graphics, podcasts, etc. As you're building your winning strategy, you should consider these questions:
Bring them in with click-worthy headlines
- What is the primary goal of your content? Are you selling things? Offering services? Providing information?
- Who is the audience you're trying to attract? What are they looking for and how does your website fulfill their needs?
- How will your content be different from all the others out there? More than just being unique, does your content fill a specific need in its field?
- Are you posting new content frequently?
- Are you amplifying your content? Is it getting in front of enough viewers?
Ask any news outlet and they will tell you catchy headlines turn into clicks. When designing your content, you also want to create eye-catching headlines. The best kind of headlines include keywords that search engines can pick up—and that make users want to click on them. For example, if you're selling handwoven blankets made from fair trade wool, you might write something like "Handcrafted, fair-trade blankets made with a conscience."
Figure out which keywords that pertain to your website have the highest hit rate and you'll be off and running. Also, keep in mind, these catchy headlines are great for social media too.
Along with catchy headlines, you'll want to write engaging content, to keep people there. Remember the rules of writing good content:
- Hook the reader with a strong lead
- Shorter paragraphs are better than longer ones
- Read your content aloud to catch errors
- Focus on storytelling
Websites are more than just words. Include compelling images and photos. A good image can tell a story better than a thousand words. But don't overdo it. Find the most compelling photos and select a few that make sense.
Use social media
One of the best ways to get your content out in front of more people is to put it on social media sites. Facebook and Twitter are popular options, but don't forget about Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube. Even LinkedIn, Google+, and Pinterest are great ways to get your content out there.
Other places to post and promote
Use Reddit. It's a powerful tool that often gets overlooked. Find out where your audience likes to go on Reddit and start posting there. Though it's very important to focus on providing information that is of value in your posts, and not advertising. Take the time to learn about the community, grow your voice, then contribute as you see a need arise.
Use Quora. This site is all about connecting people with the things they want to know. Using Quora can help you become an authority in your field and drive people to your site. On Quora, people post questions and you answer back. Posting good answers with links to your site can give you a big boost in traffic.
Get featured on bigger sites
One of the most powerful ways to get your content out there in front of new viewers is to have it republished on bigger, more established sites. Many times, you can publish content there yourself. Some of these sites include:
- Huffington Post
- The Verge
- The Next Web
Make sure you choose the right site for your content. For example, if you're writing something on pop culture, then The Verge or Huffington Post are your best bets.
Take these steps and watch your traffic go up!
